How Solar Energy Can Help Improve Your Lives

Solar energy, being known as one of the popular renewable energy sources, is one of the most available sources on Earth. However, being an intermittent source of energy, it needs to be enhanced by storage or another energy source. Even though solar power systems these days still have low average efficiencies, due to modern technology, research is being put into developing high-efficient and low-cost systems daily. Using solar energy is beneficial because it allows a more environmentally friendly or a "greener" way of living. It is also a freely available resource, which is one of its many advantages as once installed and does not cost more than the cost of setting up and routine maintenance.

Solar energy can be transmitted directly by "photovoltaics" (PV), or indirectly with "concentrating solar power (CSP). Solar photovoltaic is used to power small to medium sized equipment such as calculators to off-grid homes. CSP involves two methods: the first method is to simply boil water which is then used for providing power; the second and more complicated method entails technology such as the sterling engine dishes which use a sterling cycle engine to power a generator. Another detail to keep in mind that even though installation of solar power is costly, this cost has decreased significantly over the past couple of years making it affordable for almost everyone. Furthermore, small solar applications are also being used to replace other sources in the developing world. Since solar power is a renewable source of energy, this means you can pay up front for the next twenty years or so of energy.

Research indicates that the current photovoltaic conversion efficiency is about 15% and improving day by day! In addition, some experimental models are yielding over 40% efficiencies! This shows that solar energy is becoming more superior than what is was about twenty years ago. Solar panel efficiencies are averaged at 20%. However, do not be discouraged. The most advanced solar power systems are estimated to have an average of 40% efficiencies. However, when converting the resulting electricity (from solar energy) into light the efficiency does reduce by 15%.

Thus, solar panels do have a reduced efficiency when it comes to lighting up our homes. Nevertheless, the most proficient way of making most of solar energy is to utilize as much direct sunlight through day light and passive solar heating technologies and also use the highest efficiency solar panels for the rest of our energy requirements. High efficiency solar cells are a type of solar cell that averages the highest efficiencies in comparison to standard solar cells. Even though solar power systems generally still have low average efficiencies, a lot of research is being put into developing high-efficient and low-cost systems daily.

Learning How To Build a Magnetic Power Generator

In case you are unaware, over unity in a magnetic power generator just means that you get more power out of the motor than the power it takes to run the motor. What most people forget and don't take into consideration is that magnets have built in power and force, the magnetic force itself. If you've ever tried putting together two magnets with the same poles facing each other, you know that they oppose each other. The stronger the magnet, the more vehemently they will oppose each other. This is "energy" built into the magnet itself.

This is the magnetic force that is harnessed in a magnetic generator. If the magnets are exactly the right shape and size and the alignment of the magnets is just where it needs to be, you end up with a perpetual motion machine.

These opposing forces will automatically spin the motor around the copper coils, and that is how electricity is made and harnessed for use in your home. It really is no different than an alternator on your car other than the fact that your car engine is the force required to turn the alternator pulley that creates the electricity that charges your battery and runs your accessories.

The following are the steps that you will be needing to do to try to get this amazing generator to work.
Follow these instructions:

First step: Set your inner wheel on its titling axis. You will need to make sure that your wheel is a non-conductive material that will be able to spin freely.

The second step: You will now attach your ceramic bar magnets evenly around your rim of the wheel that you have chosen. You will need to make sure that all of the magnets are facing out wards so it has the same polarity.

The third step is to: You will need to place your fixed outer ring around your inner ring. Then make sure that your ring is also a non-conductive material as you are building yourself a magnetic power generator.

Fourth step: You will want to make sure you have lined the fixed, outer ring and the magnets that are facing in on the magnetic power generator.

Your fifth step being: Try to make your inner ring spin on your magnetic power generator that you have now built. Once the inner wheel would reach the utmost portion of the revolution, your magnets that are on the outer right should be making the ring to continuously spin on its own but this is only until the next magnet get that are the opposing magnets that are facing each other again.

The final step being: You will now want to allow your inner ring of your magnetic power generator be able to spin finally the speed has increased and energy has now been generated with your very own magnetic electric generators.

Learning How To Build DIY Solar Panels

After you have decided to learn how to build DIY solar panels, you will need to know the kinds of things do you need to get and where do you need to install them once they have been constructed.

Your geographic location will dictate where you have to direct the panels to capture the maximum power. General rule here is if you live in the northern hemisphere, aim it south, and if you live in the southern hemisphere, aim it north.

Once you have that information you are ready to learn the details of building solar panels and to do that you will need these basic things. Saw for cutting, soldering iron gun, paint brush, rosin flux pen, wire cutters, screwdriver, caulking gun, volt meter, plexiglass cutters, drill, plywood sheeting, plexiglass, tin wire, solder, silicon caulk, UV-ray protective varnish and solar cells (microcrystal cells usually cost around $2 a piece).

While the whole process of exactly how to make solar panels is a bit more involved than we can actually address in a small article such as this, the key idea is that you need to construct a frame out of plywood and plexiglass to house your solar power panels and they need to be wired together in this enclosure. The entire unit once done will collect the energy from the sun and send it through each panel as it is collected and then out the end cable.

While you learn how to build solar panels you will see that you need a way to store that energy. This is usually a form of rechargeable battery. That stored up power is then sent to device, which converts what you have stored up into 120-volt power, which can then be used to power up things within the house.

As you work on exactly how to build a solar panel, you will see that it takes a lot of these devices to be able to become free from the utility company. You will need to do some work on setting up a grid system inside the dwelling that will allow you to easily switch from one to the other and to put several of these large panels together to run more things.

Using Home Solar Panels and Home Wind Turbines as Alternative Sources of Energy

While home solar panels can reduce your power bills, you may want to think of going off the grid by using another alternative source of energy that combines with your solar power. A home wind turbine can be a great way to add wind and sun together to make your power bills lower and be less dependent on the grid. By combining the two alternative energy sources you will use less electricity and, in the long run, be saving the planet by reducing greenhouse gases that are produced by fossil fuel energy producers.

A home wind turbine is a generator that is hooked to a fan that is turned by the wind. When the fan turns, the turbine creates electricity which is then converted and moved into your home. Combined with solar power systems, which collect the power from the sun and convert it into electricity, you can use this to reduce your need for outside power sources. The negative thing about either system is on a day without wind or a day without sunlight. On those days you would have to go back to relying on either the battery power that was saved during the days with sun and wind or you would have to rely on the power grid.

In the United States, the best places for solar and wind power are in the Great Plains area. States like Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada, Nebraska, and Kansas have a high wind factor but also receive lots of sun. You can place your wind turbine in the back of your yard or in an area on your property that receives plenty of wind. They should not be placed next to a tree or building, but somewhere a little bit away from these types of structures so that the wind can hit the turbine at full force.

You would want a rotating coupling on your home wind turbine so that as the wind changes directions, so will the propellers that generate the electricity. The home solar panels should be placed in an area that will get the most sun. Your house may be shaded with trees or other buildings, but there will probably be one spot in your yard or on your property that will allow for maximum sun exposure.

You can see that this is a great way to bring down your power bills and your reliance on the power grid, except for those cloudy or windless days when you will have to rely on the power grid system. The long, winter storms can cover your solar cells, while the cloudy skies will not allow the solar energy to reach the cells as they would on a bright, sunny day. The wind could cease for two to three days and, again, you would be forced to go back to the power grid. The only way to avoid this problem is to have a full set of power collectors in which you could switch from the energy source to the power collectors and stay off the power grid for a little longer.

Build Your Own DIY Home Solar Power Systems

If you are like the thousands of other Americans concerned with their rising electricity costs, you will be interested to find a cost effective way to contribute to our clean energy future as well as slashing your electricity bill. Building your own home solar power systems is the ideal option for you.

Building a DIY solar panel will not only benefit you it will benefit the environment. Here are some simple steps to building DIY solar power systems:
  1. First you will need to decide the amount of electricity you want to produce. 12v and 16v panels are the most popular forms of solar. You can find a 16v panel at a local hardware store or marina for less than 100 dollars.
  2. Next you will need to decide on a battery. A small rechargeable battery is enough for a small solar system. In most cases a 12 volt battery system will do the trick. Make sure that it is a deep cell battery that can be used continuously.
  3. Battery box - This will protect the battery and electricity and keep it from harming others.
  4. DC Meter - This is used to match the DC input with your battery. This is necessary for you to convert solar energy to usable electricity that can be used for appliances. If you are looking to power AC appliances, you will need a power inverter.
  5. Using a handheld drill, attach your meter and DC input to the top end of the battery box. Use insulated wire to connect the meter to the battery. Make sure that you connect the negative wire to the battery first.
  6. Now you are ready to convert sunlight into usable solar power. Close the lid tight on the enclosure and place the system in an unobstructed place. Wait 8 hours and bask in the glory of home made electricity.
Renewable energy is an important part of the energy picture moving forward. The technology is incredibly reliable even with the distribution problems that people bring up. With smart metering systems being put into place, this will only help solar make its way into the main stream. There is no excuse not to switch over to solar power.

DIY Home Solar Panels

The benefits of solar panels are real. Base on a study by the California Solar Institute, $1 in cost savings annually, contributes to $20 in increased home value. This means with the cost savings of 1500 dollars, your property value will increase by $30,000. Government and state tax credits being passed at the moment also contribute to the reduction in initial costs in solar panel systems.

One of the ways that you can get into the clean energy mix is by building your own DIY solar panel. In order to build such DIY solar power systems, you will need: Plywood, masonite pegboard, plexiglass, monocrystalline solar cells, tabbing wire, flux pen, blocking diode, electrical jack, and a solder.

Once you have the proper material, we can then start building a simple solar array.
  1. First, start out by laying the solar panels in rows of six, so you get a clear idea of the size of the solar array once it comes time to build the box.
  2. Secondly, solder the solar cells to each other while connecting the tabbing wire at the solder points on the solar cells. Be careful with the cells as they are extremely brittle. You may want to consider purchasing extra cells in case any of them break.
  3. Leave enough tabbing wire on the end so that you can connect it to the blocking diode and electrical jack.
  4. Test the solar array that you have so far, to make sure that you have the right output. For a 36 solar cell setup, you should get around 18V.
  5. Next, dab the backs of the solar cells with the flux pen. The flux pen contains a heat resistant adhesive you will attach to the pegboard.
  6. Lay the pegboard over all the solar cells. Give it about a minute and then flip the setup so that the solar cells are facing up.
  7. Cut off the excess masonite pegboard.
The next step will be to build the box. The solar panel enclosure keep the solar cells from exposure to extreme weather.

The environmental benefits are also astounding. Over the lifetime of owning home solar power systems, you reduce the carbon footprint in using renewable energy equivalent to planting 1,450 trees. DIY solar panels are an incredibly clean source of energy which does not release carbon into the atmosphere. This means a clean future for everyone and future generations.

DIY Solar Panel - Learning How To Build a Solar Panel

Learning how to build a solar panel to power your home is now easier than ever. If you are tired of your high power bills, DIY solar panel is truly the ideal option for homeowners to harness the power of the sun.

Solar energy is no longer the domain of the wealthy. Anybody and everybody should do their part to clean up the environment. This starts with implementing energy efficiency measures such as weatherization. If you do your part to cut down on energy usage, we will not have to produce as much energy. It ends with implementing your own renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. DIY solar makes it incredibly easy to get a system up and running in as little as a single weekend.

There are a few things to consider when implementing a home solar panels:

1. Quality Instructions - Do you have a reliable set of instructions and more importantly support in case you run into problems with building your solar panel system? There are many sites that claim to have the information necessary to build a solar system but very few that actually deliver on that promise. Make sure that the system has been done before and consult people who have assembled their own systems.

2. Materials - In order to build your own solar panel you will need; high grade solar cells, tabbing wire, and a flux pen. You will need to build an enclosure to protect your solar panel as solar cells are extremely fragile and can break with the first bout of extreme weather if you do not have a sturdy enclosure. The cell quality varies depending on the grade. You can get by with low grade solar cells if they can be connected effectively using the tabbing wire, but make sure they are also high efficiency. Highly efficient cells convert sunlight to electricity at a high rate. The efficiency of solar cells ranges from about 15% to 25%. This number will undoubtedly go up as the market for solar contracts and more R&D money is put into solar technology.

3. Energy Storage - Depending on your purpose for building your panel, you may decide to purchase a battery. Make sure that you have enough capacity to power your appliances. Your appliances will be what determine how much battery capacity is required. If you are building a system to move completely off of your electrical grid at home, you will need more solar panel power. You will also have to decide whether you are going to connect the electricity back to the grid. To do that, you will need to consult your utility.
